Class Descriptions

Pre-School Classes – Ages 2.5 to 4 years

  • Creative Movement/Acrobats (ages 2.5-3 years) is a 45 minute class that offers our youngest dancers a fun introduction to movement, dance, and basic acrobats. Skills taught include skipping, hopping, rhythm exercises, imagery, stretch and strength exercises, and upbeat basic choreography.
  • Pre Ballet / Tap Combo (ages 3-4 years) is a 1 hour class that includes 30 minutes of Ballet and 30 minutes of Tap. Dancers will learn basic terminology and foundation skills in both styles. Our young dancers will be taught in a structured but fun fashion!
  • Pre-Ballet / Acrobats (ages 3-4yrs) is a 1 hour class that includes 30 minutes of Ballet and 30 minutes of Acrobats. Dancers will learn the basic terminology and foundation skills of ballet along with beginning acrobat skills including: stretch and strength exercises for the upper body and back, Forward Rolls, Backward Rolls, Balancing exercises, and more!

Level 1 Beginner

  • Level 1 Ballet / Tap / Jazz Combo (ages 5-6years) is a 1 hour and 30 minute class that includes all three styles of dance each week. Dancers will continue to learn and build on the basics of Ballet and Tap and will also be introduced to Jazz!
  • Level 1 Hip Hop (ages 5-8 years) Hip Hop is an urban style of dance that incorporates body isolations, stylized movements, freestyle movements, and choreography. Class time is 45 minutes. WE ALWAYS USE KID FRIENDLY, APPROPRIATE MUSIC IN OUR HIP HOP CLASSES!
  • Level 1 Beginner Acrobats is a great compliment to a dancers training. Classes help to build strength and flexibility along with acrobatic skills. Beginner class will focus on the following skills: Cartwheels, Running Cartwheels, Backbends, Headstand, Handstand, Stretch and Strengthen

Level 2 Beginner / Intermediate

  • Level 2 Ballet / Jazz Combo (ages 7 to 10 years) Class is a 1 hour and 15 minute combo of Ballet and Jazz.
    Ballet is the foundation of all dance styles and is an essential element in a dancers training. The ballet portion of class will include: barre work, center work, and across the floor. Dancers will learn correct terminology, technique, stretch and strengthening exercises, and correct body alignment and posture. Jazz is a technical style of dance rooted in Ballet, but more stylized, using sharper movements and lines, and more isolation. Examples of Jazz dance can be seen in many Broadway musicals, and popular tv shows such as So You Think You Can Dance.
  • Level 2 Tap (ages 7 to 10 years) Tap is a dance style that focuses on rhythm, timing, and technique using the tap shoes as a percussive instrument on the floor. Tap is an excellent way for dancers to develop musicality. Class time is 45 minutes.
  • Level 2 Hip Hop (ages 7 to 10 years) Hip Hop is an urban style of dance that incorporates body isolations, stylized movements, freestyle movements, and choreography. Class time is 45 minutes. WE ALWAYS USE KID FRIENDLY, APPROPRIATE MUSIC IN OUR HIP HOP CLASSES!

Level 3 Intermediate / Advanced

  • Level 3 Ballet (ages 9-12 years) Ballet is the foundation of all dance styles, and is an essential element in a dancers training. Level 3 Ballet is a 1 hour class that will include barre work, center work, and across the floor. Dancers will learn correct terminology, technique, stretch and strengthening exercises, and correct body alignment and posture. This is an INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED LEVEL class. Dancers should have mastered Level 2 Beginner before entering Level 3.
  • Level 3 Jazz (ages 9-12 years) Jazz is a technical style of dance rooted in Ballet, but more stylized, using sharper movements and lines, and more isolation. Examples of Jazz dance can be seen in many Broadway musicals, and popular TV shows such as So You Think You Can Dance. Level 2 Jazz is a 1 hour class. This is an INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED LEVEL class. Dancers should have mastered Level 2 Beginner before entering Level 3.
  • Level 3 Tap (ages 9-12 years) Tap is a dance style that focuses on rhythm, timing, and technique using the tap shoes as a percussive instrument on the floor. Tap is an excellent way for dancers to develop musicality. Class time is 45 minutes. This is an INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED LEVEL class. Dancers should have mastered Level 2 Beginner before entering Level 3.
  • Level 3 Hip Hop (ages 9-12 years) Hip Hop is an urban style of dance that incorporates body isolations, stylized movements, freestyle movements, choreography, etc… Class time is 45 minutes. WE ALWAYS USE KID FRIENDLY, APPROPRIATE MUSIC IN OUR HIP HOP CLASSES!

Level 4 Advanced

  • Level 4 Ballet (ages 11 years – Teen) Ballet is the foundation of all dance styles and is an essential element in a dancers training. Class time is 1 hour and 30 minutes. Class will include barre work, center work, and across the floor. Dancers should have mastered Levels 1 through 3 and be at an advanced level in order to be placed in this class.
  • Level 4 Jazz + Leaps and Turns (ages 11 years – Teen) Jazz is a technical style of dance rooted in Ballet, but more stylized, using sharper movements and lines, and more isolation. Examples of Jazz dance can be seen in many Broadway musicals, and popular TV shows such as So You Think You Can Dance. Class time is 1 hour and 15 minutes and will include stretch, conditioning, across the floor progressions and choreography. Dancers should have mastered Levels 1 through 3 and be at an advanced level in order to be placed in this class.
  • Level 4 Tap (ages 11 years – Teen) Tap is a dance style that focuses on rhythm, timing, and technique using the tap shoes as a percussive instrument on the floor. Tap is an excellent way for dancers to develop musicality. Class time is 45 minutes. Dancers should have mastered Levels 1 through 3 and be at an advanced level in order to be placed in this class.
  • Level 4 Hip Hop (ages 11 years – Teen) Hip Hop is an urban style of dance that incorporates body isolations, stylized movements, freestyle movements, and choreography. Class time is 45 minutes.
  • Level 4 Contemporary (ages 11 years – Teen) Contemporary dance is a style that incorporates elements of ballet, jazz, and modern and acrobats. Class time is 1 hour. Taking a Ballet and/or Jazz class is highly recommended to all dancers taking Contemporary.

Acrobats

City Dance Center is proud to be an ACRO ARTS CERTIFIED STUDIO! The Acro Arts Syllabus is endorsed by Cirque Du Soleil and is a leading training method around the world. Our Acrobats program is broken into 3 Levels: BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE, AND ADVANCED.

Acrobats Level Placement is based on skills mastered and not on age. It is extremely important that a student be placed properly as injury can occur if a student is attempting skills that he or she is not properly prepared for.

  • BEGINNER ACROBATS (Ages 5 years and up) – Dancers will start with the basics and build upper body strength, and back flexibility along with learning basic acro skills: Cartwheels, Forward Rolls, Headstands, Handstands, Running Cartwheels, Backbends
  • INTERMEDIATE ACROBATS (Ages 5 years and up) – Pre-requisites: Dancers must have mastered the following skills: Cartwheel, Running Cartwheel, One Handed Cartwheels, Unassisted Standing Backbend
  • ADVANCED ACROBATS (Ages 5 years and up) – Pre-requisites: Dancers must have mastered all skills from the previous levels and be able to perform an unassisted Back or Front Walkover.

Specialty Classes

  • Kids Latin Dance (ages 9 years – Teen) Add versatility to your dancing! Latin dance is a fun style that builds musicality and stylized body movement in dancers. This 45 minute class will explore Salsa, Cha Cha Cha, Afro Cuban, and Reggaeton. Latin dance is highly stylized using arm movements, hip isolations, and footwork. Level 2/3 is geared toward our Intermediate Level dancers that are looking to expand their dance vocabulary. Level 4 is an Advanced class for experienced Latin dancers.
  • Clogging (ages 9 years – Teen) Clogging is a fun, upbeat dance style in which the dancer’s footwear is used musically to create audible percussive rhythms, usually to the downbeat with the heel keeping the rhythm. NOTE – Clogging and Tap are different dance styles.
